Many Thanks to our Plan Creator and Guest Judges.
We are so pleased to have the DIY Huntress as our Season 6 plan creator and judge. I’m Sam – psychologist and do it yourselfer from Long Island, NY. Welcome to my blog! I specialize in basic woodworking projects, home improvement ideas, and creative crafts. Best part is, I do it all on a strict budget! Being creative doesn’t have to break the bank. Trust me, if it did, I wouldn’t be here!
When the entrepreneur started Jeff Mack Designs three years ago, his expertise was in manipulating steel, a skill he acquired working part-time in a shop alongside his father. After college, Mack remained in the steel industry until he was laid off. “I decided to go into business, but I didn’t have a shop or a laser or any machines, so I took on small jobs that I could design in my condo and outsource.” The designer made metal table legs and outsourced the welding. When he delivered the product, customers started asking if he could get them wood tops, so he outsourced those and then wood was introduced. Today, Mack’s Mississauga shop is where he meets residential and commercial clients to discuss their furniture design needs.
I started my journey in woodworking innocently enough in 2002, taking an Intro to Woodworking class at my local Woodcraft store. I made a simple serving tray and was amazed by what I was able to do with my hands in just one afternoon. I followed up that class with more classes at a local High School Woodshop that offered night classes. My girlfriend was a teacher at the school and turned me onto the classes. I was loving my new found hobby and enjoying building things as a creative outlet. Over the next 4 years I learned everything there is to know about home repair and DIY…okay, maybe not everything but it felt like it! I had gotten more into the DIY world than the woodworking world and I wasn’t so much making things as I was fixing things, but I still felt a pull to make, to create, to build.
Upon finishing my career (not by choice) in the NFL, I took a year off from just about everything. While still playing I picked up the hobby of woodworking. When I wasn’t working, or training, or doing anything really besides eating and spending money…. I got more and more into the craft. I really developed a deep passion for building things, and my mind got turning.
This new hobby was fun, fulfilling, and challenging. I was hooked. I started acquiring tools and fortunately a buddy of mine let me work in his heated garage. Since then I have been chasing my next dream, as The Builder, and I haven’t looked back.
IGBC Mini Challenge 2 HAS ENDED! THANK YOU to Judge Ryan MacDonald
Thank you so much to our Season 5 Plan Creator and Guest Judge
With a bachelor’s degree in architecture and master’s degree in construction, Tom Bury has been designing and building spaces for more than a decade. His projects range from multi-million dollar public and private sector buildings to private residences and everything in between. With a well-rounded background in construction, architecture and design, Tom can do it all.
Tom is the Founder/Partner in Division 9 Design + Construction, L.P. which is both a design firm and construction company. Tom is best known for his most challenging project to date, working with Chef Robert Irvine as the lead construction manager on the Food Network series Restaurant: Impossible. The two travel across the country trying to save America’s most desperate restaurants in just two days and with a budget of $10,000. Restaurant: Impossible is currently the most watched show on the Food Network with approximately 2 million of viewers tuning in each premiere episode.
So how did I get into building things you ask? Well, I have always enjoyed working with wood and building things, although I have never been all that good at it. Until one day in 2013. We had just finished having a screen room added on and needed furniture. A lot of the furniture we were looking at was ridiculously priced and rather simple design. Having this “I can build that!” attitude, I could see my wife rolling her eyes from the other room. But, I was determined. After some research, I settled on a plan from Ana-White. And wah-lah, there it was, a beautiful Belvedere Lounge Chair that looked like it was straight from Restoration Hardware. My wife and I were very surprised how well it turned out. I learned a very valuable lesson that day. Have a plan, and follow it. My problem before was that I always shot from the hip, resulting in a less that perfect product. SO, using the 3D modeling expertise I have from my engineering background, from now on when I build something I vow to come up with a beautiful design first and then provide the most accurate and easy to understand plans so that everyone else can enjoy, not only the result of building a fine piece of furniture, but the journey of how it came to be.
Season 4 judging panel
Popular craftsman from HGTV’s Fixer Upper, Clint Harp, now stars in his own show on DIY Network. Wood Work follows Clint and his team as they create new furniture out of reclaimed wood and build beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces to incorporate into family homes. Clint and his wife Kelly founded their company, Harp Design Co, out of their garage and shortly thereafter moved with their three children to Waco, Texas. Soon after settling in, Clint met HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines and his skills helped him get quickly cast in role of carpenter in the now hugely popular series, Fixer Upper.
Season 3 judging panel:
